A new season has arrived and with it comes a delectable collection of new trends. This season is about vintage shapes, bold colours and funky fabrics and whether you like to shop at Coast (always worth a look if you’re on the lookout for a beautiful evening dress), Ebay or Oxfam you’re sure to find something to suit the mood.
On the runways, in anticipation of A/W 2011, the designers pulled out all the stops to find edgy new routes into occasion wear. The hottest looks in evening dress are as follows:
1. At Marni and Miu Miu it was all about the vintage print. Think delicate 1940s patterns in demure palates or Japanese-textile-inspired florals featuring a bold base colour with a delicate design. Shapes were flattering, with a lot of wrap-around styles floating down the catwalks. A pencil skirt and a half sleeve make for understated elegance.
2. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you have to wear a dress to look dressy. There are a number of different ways to approach the diverse field of evening apparel. A favourite look on the Paul & Joe runway paired a Pucci-style print trouser with a fitted shirt and a velvet blazer. Going for expensive textures – velour, silk, velvet – adds the sense of occasion. Make the look feminine by teaming with a fabulous pair of heels and softly styled hair.
3. A great way to make an impact this season is through bold use of colour. The colour block look has made such a mark on the contemporary fashion world that there are no real guidelines as to what palate to pick but if you’re struggling to blend your bold brights together turn your eye away from the catwalk a moment and towards the red carpet.

Start with a colour that works with your complexion, then experiment with contrasting tones in order to find the block brights that work for you.
